Clydebank produced a fantastic performance in front of a crowd of 117 to sweep past an under-strength Edinburgh City side.
It's not as if Clydebank were their strongest either, as we had several injuries and players with priorities, and I noticed we only had 4 subs on the bench! We also had 3 trialists starting for us.
Here's how we lined up:
1) Stephen Mehigan
2) Graeme Dempsey
3) John McIntyre
4) Trialist A
5) David Harris
6) Trialist B
7) Mark Hailstones
8) Joe Allison
9) David Simeon
10) Ryan Waddell
11) Trialist C
SUBS
12) Mark McGuire
13) Trialist D
14) Trialist E
15) Trialist F
16) Budgie McGhie
It was the hosts who started the strongest, as they came close with 5 minutes gone, a ball hit across the face of goal being narrowly missed by the attacker rushing in to try and make contact with the ball.
Edinburgh City then had a free kick easily saved by Mehigan on 9 minutes, and on 15 minutes John McIntyre wasted a free kick by the corner flag by over-hitting it.
Disaster struck on 18 minutes as a defensive lapse by Trialist A, who gifted the ball to a City player, who then turned him on the byline and he blasted past a helpless and sun-tanned Mehigan to make it Edinburgh City 1-0 Clydebank. This seemed to give Clydebank the kick up the arse they needed, and they started to play much better football. On 24 minutes, John McIntyre had a shot blocked, and this eventually resulted in a corner kick. It was straight at the keeper, but we were starting to pressure City more and more.
Just before the half-hour mark saw another corner kick being swung in, only for it to be headed away. But it was only headed out to the edge of the box, where Mark Hailstones was waiting and he collected the ball and simply fired it into the top corner to send the travelling Bankies fans nuts, and to make the score Edinburgh City 1-1 Clydebank. With under 5 minutes to go before half time, Mark Hailstones once again caused problems for the City defence, and was seemingly through on goal, with an option to square it to a team-mate, but instead went for goal himself, and got crunched inside the box. But alas, no penalty was given, he remained on the ground in pain and the fans were miffed that we didn't get a penalty. Hailstones was able to continue, but no other events happened before half-time, and the scoreline remained at:EDINBURGH CITY 1-1 CLYDEBANK
City kicked off the 2nd half, and instantly threatened the Bankies defence with a shot being sliced by the post. Clydebank responded by going right up the park and creating a chance for Waddell, who lobbed the ball too high and wide.
48 minutes gone saw a hilarious moment, when Mark Hailstones was looking to add another spectacular goal to his list of kick-arse goals, but blasted the ball (from 30 yards out, at least) well, WELL over, and only troubled the wee guy who was bored, and wanted to be ball boy.
2 minutes after this saw another Clydebank opportunity spurned by the goalie, who saved easily. And on 52 minutes, another free kick by the corner flag was once again wasted, and a minute later a Clydebank shot was blocked. It was a positive start to the 2nd half by Clydebank, as City looked out of place and Clydebank got comfortable and started passing the ball more freely and creating more chances.
5 minutes before the hour saw Clydebank put more and more pressure on the City defence, winning multiple corners and making the defenders and the keeper work to keep the score level.
57 minutes: SUB - Ryan Waddell and Trialist C OFF, Mark McGuire and Trialist E ON. Trialist E made an impact right away, a shot just zipping past the post.
Not long after the hour, Clydebank won yet another corner, but it was cleared away yet again from the stubborn City defence.
65 minutes: SUB - Mark Hailstones OFF, Trialist D ON
70 minutes: SUB - Trialist A OFF, Trialist F ON
After these 2 substitutions were made, City looked more threatening, and the fans were hoping for a draw at this point in the match.
With 15 minutes to go, Trialist D scored with a header sailing into the top corner which sent the fans into jubilation. Most had no idea who he was, but he was fast becoming a fan favourite already. The score was now Edinburgh City 1-2 Clydebank. And that fan favourite feeling only grew stronger when 3 minutes later, Simmy cheekily back-heeled it to Trialist D, who then drilled the ball into the bottom corner to make it Edinburgh City 1-3 Clydebank. With 5 minutes to go, and the victory seemingly secured, John McIntyre curled in a wonderful free-kick into the corner of the net to make it Edinburgh City 1-4 Clydebank. City battled to get the last say in the match, but a shot on the stroke of full time went just wide. The whistle blew, the Bankies fans cheered, the diminished squad done us proud and it was off to their social club to have a pie, a drink and a chat with anyone who'd bother to listen. The final score at the Meadowbank Stadium was: EDINBURGH CITY 1-4 CLYDEBANK

Paul Wilson celebrating a goal in his very first match for the Bankies, as a trialist. Doesn't look TOO happy about it, though...
In-depth analysis
Clydebank played a 4-4-2 formation throughout, but City meanwhile had a lone striker up front for the whole game, and at times the preferred formation for City was 4-1-3-1-1 formation. Sounds complicated, but really it's only a 4-5-1 formation, with one midfielder being more defensive and one midfielder helping the lone striker more than the other midfielders.
Edinburgh City were not at full strength, and one strong reason for that was because of a wedding a player was having on the same day. A lot of the regulars at City were invited, so couldn't play. We weren't playing the proper Edinburgh City side...then again, we weren't fielding our strongest side either! Plus, a few fan favourites left them, like Jonothan Seeley.
Our wing backs were constantly pushing down the wing to help create chances, and this was evidently clear for Dempsey. John McIntyre came forward to take set pieces, and Dempsey just pushed forward whenever possible.
In midfield, Hailstones stuck to the right of the pitch, and was really effective in that position. Joe Allison had a good performance in the attacking midfield role, while Ryan Waddell had a great game down the left wing. Simeon's best contribution to the game was his delightful back-heel set-up for Trialist 13, but still had a good game.
