Kingjad's player interview
Jon Crawford - Clydebank Centre Back

Jon Crawford

This is a BIG interview, with Clydebank's co-Player of the Year.  Jon Crawford answers some questions I unloaded on him.

Wonderful news you're staying for season 2004/2005, you'll be a huge influence on the team this year.  How do you think your new defensive team-mates of Fallen and Brady are fitting in?

I would say both players are fitting in as well as can be expected, Sean has done well for someone as young and inexperienced, he has a great throw-in and I think that could be a big weapon for us this season. Michael on the other hand has great experience and is a great signing for the club. I actually played alongside Mick and a certain Budgie McGhee about 10 years ago for Arthurlie so I'm well aware of how good a player he can be.

In the recent Sectional League Cup tie, you were penalised for a foul in the penalty box, a decision which changed the course of the match.  It seemed to many fans that the attacker backed into you, and it was not a foul.  I'm sure the fans would be interested in your comments about this incident.

I felt at the time that the player made no attempt to jump for the ball and as I jumped he backed into me, I thought the foul was on me. The referee obviously thought otherwise but to book me for it was a poor decision, it was my first 'foul' of the match!

What are your expectations for Clydebank this season?

I think you'll find everybody at the club has high expectations for this season and I'm no different.Obviously Promotion has to be the main aim but wether or not we can achieve that in our first season in Division 1 remains to be seen.

Would you like to see Clydebank return to the seniors?

A return to the senoirs for Clydebank I think is a long way off at the moment.I think the majority of the fans are happy just to see the club back in existance and prospering albeit in the Junior ranks.

Were you as amazed as most fans when you scored with your feet against Shettleston on Saturday 21st August?

No, I wasn't amazed to score with my feet! I did it once last season against Wishaw, for a natural goal scorer like myself it's no big deal!!!

Who do you get along with best at Clydebank?

I get on equally well with all the players at the club, the squad have a great team spirit amongst them.I even get on with our management team!!

What's been your favourite match?

My favourite match was beating Lesmahagow 1-0 at Glenhead,it was a massive result for us and gave us the confidence to go on and win the league.

Is there a match you'd rather forget altogether?

Being sent off against Vale of Clyde was a big dissapointment to me personally but these things do happen. However, I can honestly say there hasn't been a match I'd want to forget,I enjoy every game I play for the club.

What's been the defining highlight of your entire footballing career?

I think winning promotion would be the highlight of any players career.I've been fortunate enough to be promoted twice with Arbroath, once with Queen of the South and once with the Bankies.

Do you have a favourite Bankies moment?

I have two favourite Bankies moments, winning the league last season and playing against Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden in 1990.

Best player you've played against?/Played with?

Best player I've played against is Colin Samuel when he played with Falkirk, best player I've played with has to be Davie Cooper.

You're the most experienced and senior defender...well, player, in the team, so some fans are curious as to how you don't take command at the back as much.  (A critic's question from biggalsuperbankie)

I'd like to think I do plenty talking in the defence but we also have experienced players like Harkie, big Del and Mick Fallen who do more than their fair share of commanding, sometimes it's hard to get a word in!!

In match programs, when there's a player profile, the best thing about playing for Clydebank is the fans, every player says it.  SO, apart from the fans, what's the best thing about being a Bankie?

Best thing about being a Bankie other than the support is the way the club's being run now, there's a real 'feel good' factor about the whole set up.

Worst footballing moment ever?

The first time I was ever sent off which was for Clydebank against Partick Thistle at Firhill. It was only 20 minutes into the game and I got a staight red card, I was in tears by the time I got to the dressing room!

THIAF call you "The Beast", team-mates call you "Craw", opposition call you "That big bugger'll crush ya!" and I call you sensational.  But to clear things up for all the fans, can you confirm that this WILL be your last season of football, before you go to America to continue your favourite hobby of flying planes?

My flying training isn't just a hobby, I'm currently training for my Commercial Licence and unfortunately that involves doing my flying in America.I can't say that this will definately be my last season playing football, but being able to combine the two might not be possible.

Cheers for the interview

Cheers, Jon Crawford (The Beast!!!)

That's what he had to say, hope you enjoyed the interview.  I plan to do another one or 2 more interviews, so it isn't over yet!!!
